Search Tips

The Keyword Search (to search all three patient education content sets in Micromedex® CareNotes®: Care & Condition, Drug and Lab)

  1. Select a location (if applicable) from the drop-down list then click the GO button.
  2. Type the relevant keyword in the Search entry box.

NOTE:
Do not enter “and”, “or”, or any other Boolean search operator, even when searching more than one keyword at a time. Searches using multiple keywords will by default perform as an "and" search; meaning that all terms in the keywords must be found in the title (or associated synonym) to be considered a match.

  1. By default, all document types enabled for this location will be searched. However, if a specific point in the continuum of care is desired, select the desired Document Type(s) from the Searcj drop-down list.
  2. Click the Search button.

Keywords:
Keywords are terms which describe the information or document you seek. You search for patient education documents by entering one or more keywords, performing a search, then clicking links to open the document titles.

Every title has indexed keywords associated with it. These terms correspond to the keywords entered on the Keyword Search page when you started your inquiry.

When Micromedex® CareNotes® finds one or more titles associated with the keyword(s) you entered, it displays a search results page. Clicking one or more of the title links opens the page which lists all document types and languages available for the title.

Expanding Search Keywords
If you find few results, your keyword may be too specific. First, try a more general search term like cancer rather than neoplasm. If you need to broaden your search term, expand the form of your keyword or type only part of the word. The CareNotes application searches for an expanded match of the keyword containing that string of letters. Consider the following example:

  • Appendectomy returns several documents containing the index term appendectomy.
  • App, a broader keyword capable of more matches on keywords that begin with the letters app , returns results for many titles

Building a Keyword Search
To build a search from the Keyword Search page:

1. Select a Location
If your CareNotes administrator has defined locations at your facility, you will see a 'Location:' dropdown list. Select a location (such as a department or unit name) from the list, then click the GO button.
Selecting the proper location ensures that you will see all of the documents, document types, languages, delivery options, Hot Lists, and document headers/footers that are available to you.

2. Single keyword search:
Type the relevant keyword. If you are unsure of the exact spelling, just type the first few letters.

3. Multiple keywords: You can conduct a single search using multiple Keywords.

For example:
Keywords = HOW TO GIVE A SUBCUTANEOUS

This method searches across all content sets (Care & Condition, Drug, Lab) and retrieves matches to the keywords entered. It is important to remember that when using multiple keywords, all terms must be found within the document title to be considered a match.

Matches to keywords may be found within the document title or associated as a related term (synonym), lab test, brand name, or generic name.

NOTE:
Although all documents are available in English and Spanish (with many titles available in 13 additional languages) only English keywords are recognized and searchable.
Do not enter “and”, “or”, or any other Boolean search operator, even when searching more than one keyword at a time.

4. Select the desired Document Type.

By default, all available document types are included in a search. You may narrow the search to a specific type by selecting it from the drop-down list.

Available Document Types:
The CareNotes application provides concise, customizable materials to address patient condition, treatment, follow-up care, psychosocial issues, continuing health, and the most frequently administered drugs. All documents in the application have been organized by document type to allow the clinician to recognize at a glance the point in the patients’ care for which the document was written. So from presentation to discharge, Micromedex® CareNotes® can provide the appropriate patient education materials for the full continuum of care
